Ltd Gallery: "From the Toy Box" Show...

Man-oh-man what a busy year it's been!!! I've got a couple pieces in an upcoming show at Ltd Gallery in Seattle. The theme was "From the Toy Box", a show about our favorite childhood toys.

How could I resist participating since it's no secret I frickin' love toys. Here is a sneak peek with my usual super crude sketch/color study in Photoshop. I'll reveal the finals once the show goes live.

So if you're in Seattle on November 13th go check it out. Otherwise you can see the work when it's posted online.

Sketch_Dailies: Beebop and Rocksteady...

So I was a little late on this one but man...it's rough to crank one of these out in one day when you have a dumb old job. Anyway I remember always thinking that even as a kid, Beebop looked friggen weird!! Hopefully I did these two idiots justice. Beebop and Rocksteady for Sketch_Dailies. Even though Sketch_Dailies has moved on from TMNT, it would be kinda fun to do all the other toys...

Sketch_Dailies: Metalhead...

I remember I had this figure and thought it was awesome. Then I was playing TMNT: The Arcade Game and he showed up as a boss with full on extendy-arms, lasers and hidden chest gun!! It was an epic moment for me. Of course he immediately kicked my ass and I had to play the level over again. Metalhead for Sketch_Dailies.

Sketch_Dailies: Sergeant Bananas...

Love the Sketch_Dailies themes going on right now! TMNT characters! I was a huge TMNT nut when I was a kid. I had almost all the figures. I am always amazed when someone mentions some obscure figure that I completely didn't remember I had...like Sergeant Bananas.

Sketch_Dailies: Tigger...

Another quick doodle for Sketch_Dailies. Today's topic was Tigger. I always thought the Winnie the Pooh characters were stuffed animals so I added some extra stitches.

Sketch_Dailies: Batman...

There's a great Twitter group called "Sketch_Dailies". They have a daily topic and incredible artists from all over post to it. It's really fun to see all the different styles, ideas and interpretations. A few days ago the topic was "Batman" and I did this doodle.

Steven...

Just playing around and wanted to doodle Steven from the amazing Cartoon Network show "Steven Universe".

Some Process Stuff...

Like my last post, here is another piece for a pretty fun personal project I'm messing around with. No details right now but I thought I would show a little process work. Start to finish.

Print
First off my initial sketch. There were other sketches of course, but this was the look I decided on. I wanted this demonic kind of character, but done in a way where it is just standing there gazing at you creepily. Next my color study done in Photoshop with a Cintiq. I do my color studies pretty loosely, but they do act as a guide for my final work in Illustrator. I wanted the piece to really feel lit from the flames.

Print
After further picking my work apart, I realized I super hated the pose. It just wasn't right. I did a corrective sketch in PShop and printed it out so I could draw a new sketch by hand. I prefer drawing by hand. Old school. Here I added more skulls and some skeletal elements to the uniform. I love the tiny knee-high boots.

Print
At the same time I was working on the border and card info (yeah...it's for a card game type thing). Using the old sketch I plotted out how I wanted the image to interact with the card border and did the final border and type in Illustrator.

Print
Lastly, I take all the elements into Illustrator and begin my tedious process of digital painting with vectors. A lot of my fellow artists call me nuts for this techique, but it's actually very close to how I used to paint traditionally and I love cut paper stuff...call it a happy medium for me. The image on the left shows the wireframe mode of my Illustrator file. My final piece is on the right.

Hand drawn type...

Took a fun hand drawn type class at Light Grey Art Lab with the talented Andres Guzman. Here were a few of my favorite pieces I walked away with.

I Choose y...Oh My GAWD!!!...

Hey everyone. I originally wasn't going to post this until the Pokemon Battle Royale show, but a lot of the other contributors were revealing their works and I got all excited to show mine ahead of time. Ha.
I was excited to get to do Charizard. Just this giant, bad ass fire breathing dragon thing that would never lose a fight. Then from what I saw of the cartoon they made his personality out to be this cocky asshole who would burn the crap out of Ash every chance he got. I tried to capture a little bit of that personality in this piece. I also loved playing around with the color on this one with the mixes of purples and greens instead of just making it orange. I hope you fans out there feel I did Charizard justice in this rendering and if you get the chance come to the show. It's going to be a huge amount of nerdy fun.

I Choose You!...

I am super excited for the upcoming Pokemon Battle Royal show hosted by my amazing friends at Light Grey Art Lab. I was lucky enough to nab the baddest of bad dude Pokemon Charizard! I'll admit it's gonna tough to capture just the right pose and emotion for such a beast, but I'm up to the challenge. After many attempts I'm finally on the right path. Below is a little sneak peek (and the only image I'll show until the show).
